Nuclear Grade Gloveboxes and Inert Atmosphere Containment Systems

The handling of radioactive materials demands the most stringent containment standards available in the glovebox industry. A containment breach — whether through mechanical failure, leak path degradation, or procedural error — carries consequences for personnel, facility, and regulatory standing that are categorically different from failures in any other laboratory environment. Nuclear glovebox systems must therefore be designed, manufactured, and maintained to standards that have no margin for compromise.

LABPRO's nuclear grade glovebox systems are designed specifically for demanding contaminated and radioactive environments. With welded side panels, a leak rate below 0.001% vol/hour, automatic inert atmosphere purification to below 1 ppm O₂ and H₂O, and a comprehensive service programme, LABPRO systems are trusted by nuclear research institutes, fuel cycle facilities, and radiopharmaceutical producers across India and internationally

Nuclear and Radiological Applications for LABPRO Containment Gloveboxes

  • Radioactive material handling and processing: actinide chemistry, uranium and thorium compound synthesis, and plutonium handling in research and fuel cycle contexts.

  • Nuclear fuel research and development: mixed oxide (MOX) fuel preparation, advanced fuel fabrication research, and used fuel characterisation.

  • Radiopharmaceutical production: synthesis, formulation, and quality testing of radiolabelled compounds and short-lived diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals.

  • Nuclear waste characterisation: sampling, assay, and packaging of radioactive waste streams requiring both inert atmosphere and containment.

  • Small modular reactor (SMR) research: materials research for advanced reactor concepts including molten salt reactors, thorium fuel cycles, and accident-tolerant fuels.

  • Alpha, beta, and gamma source handling: source preparation, metrology, calibration source production, and radiation protection instrument testing.

  • Dual-function applications: actinide compounds that are simultaneously radioactive and air-sensitive, requiring combined containment and inert atmosphere <1 ppm O₂/H₂O.

Leak Tightness: The Defining Specification for Nuclear Gloveboxes

ISO 10648-2 defines four leak tightness classes for containment enclosures. Class 4 (< 1% vol/hour) is the minimum for general containment; Class 1 (< 0.05% vol/hour) is required for serious hazard applications. LABPRO Ultra Edition systems achieve below 0.001% vol/hour — an order of magnitude below the ISO Class 1 threshold — through welded panel construction and rigorous manufacturing quality control.

Many regulatory frameworks for radioactive material handling require documented and periodically verified leak rates. LABPRO's service programme includes ISO 10648-2-compliant leak testing as a standard component of annual maintenance contracts, with calibration certificates and inspection reports provided for quality management and regulatory submission.

Combined inert atmosphere and containment for actinide chemistry

Many actinide applications require both operator protection (containment, negative pressure) and material protection (inert atmosphere, O₂ and H₂O below 1 ppm) simultaneously. LABPRO engineers design dual-function systems that achieve both requirements within a single enclosure using independent inert atmosphere purification loops within a negative-pressure containment envelope. This capability is critical for nuclear research facilities where the material hazard and the material sensitivity both demand the highest available standard.

Service, Maintenance, and Compliance for Nuclear Facilities

LABPRO's Comprehensive Annual Maintenance Contracts (CAMC) cover scheduled leak testing, purification catalyst replacement, sensor calibration, electrical and mechanical inspection, and detailed inspection reports. The myLABPRO remote monitoring platform provides continuous, logged atmosphere data that can be integrated into a facility's quality management system as a real-time audit trail.

Our engineering team holds deep application knowledge in mechanical, electrical, PLC programming, and materials science relevant to nuclear glovebox operation. On-site service is available across India and the United States, with remote diagnostic support available globally via the myLABPRO platform.
